Reducing reliance on residential care?

The Welsh Assembly Health and Social Care Committee has published an interesting report recommending that the reliance on residential care for older people should be reduced and more support given to those making difficult care decisions.

â Considering care options for our later years can be an incredibly difficult process, as it is a recognition either of our own diminishing independence or that of those we love,â said Mark Drakeford AM, Chair of the Committee. â Sensitivity and clarity is of paramount importance at this time. The Committee believes that more must be done to reduce the pressures associated with making these hard decisions.â

Other recommendations made in the report include:

  • â ¢ Ensuring older people have greater access to effective advocacy;
  • â ¢ Offering an assessment of need to all those considering residential care;
  • â ¢ Better treatment of common disabling conditions in the community; and
  • â ¢ Giving residents, families and carers a greater voice within a care home.
