25% of Wills Set to End in Financial Mess

A new study has revealed that of the 40% of Brits who currently have wills, 25% of all wills are likely to end in a disaster according to a study from Saga Legal Services.

The survey shows that it is often better to have no will than a poorly drafted or incorrect will with many families left with a significant financial burden as a result of a will that does not suit their needs. Saga’s evidence revealed that one in five either downloaded a template from the internet or bought one from a shop whilst 5% drew something from nothing without looking at any aspect of the law.

Danger of Poorly Constructed Wills

The survey revealed that 37% of all those who took part believed that the main reason they opted for a DIY will was that they believed it was cheaper than going through a solicitor. However one-fifth also believed that it was not worth going to a solicitor as they did not wish to make their affairs knowledge.

One in fourteen of those who carried out the survey stated that they had or knew of some of the issues that could arise as a result of a DIY will or poorly drafted will, with 46% of those aware of an issue stating that they knew a will was responsible for falling out or an issue with an inheritance.

The issue with such wills or DIY drafts is that they do not take into consideration current circumstances and also do not age well. Many fail to be updated and can often lead to a legal battle for those you have left behind.
